Black Cinema 1966 - 2007

In 1996's The Watermelon Woman, director Cheryl Dunye searches for the name of an uncredited Black actress. Replete with stores of information such as libraries and video shops – The Watermelon Woman calls into question the effect of an archive on race and sexuality; the identities denied easy entrance – both to exist within them, and later to find them.

The Watermelon Woman and other films from the Black Lives collection are currently available to view on the Criterion Channel without a paywall. Consider the opening of this particular archive – and please also check out @film2future – a fund for students in LA's underrepresented communities to gain access to film equipment and opportunity.
